Was scared and confused…

Friday March 14, 2007 was like any other friday at work, the weekend was coming up and I was excited to go home and relax. There was only one problem, my right eye would not stop watering. I thought I had something in my eye and it just wouldn’t come out. That evening after eating dinner at home I slowly but surely started to realize that something just wasn’t right. I can’t laugh like normal or even smile correctly. Then it started to dawn on me…this morning I couldn’t spit out my toothpaste quite right and I kept dribbling coffee all over myself. I was very frightened, stroke was the first thing that came to mind. At this point it was almost midnight. I called a cab and headed to the ER.
The doctors there were so nice and reassuring that I was going to be ok. I just had to let out a sigh of relief. They prescribed a steroid and advised me to buy some “Natural Tears” drops. I did just that the next day. For a few days after my diagnosis I had a terrible pain in my neck, like a strong muscle cramp, just behind my ear for about three or four days. Aleve became my best friend. My experience with Bells has been a humbling one. Teaching myself how to eat and drink with Bells has been a very daunting task. I have not let Bells interfere with my daily routine or habits. I actually love to smile with Bells because it sparks interest wherever you go. I had a young child become so mesmerized by my condition on the city bus that we ended up talking all the way to my stop.
I encourage anyone dealing with Bells to embrace it. It may only happen to you once during your life, take every moment and happening in stride and enjoy life. Anyways, over the counter lubricating eye drops are a life saver. If your eye gets dry or starts to sting, use a couple drops and you should be as good as new. I usually try to lubricate my eye just before bed and first thing in the morning too. As far as my excruciating neck pain, like I said previously Aleve worked wonders. It is now just over two weeks later and I am still dealing with Bells but I have shown some improvement in my cheek. Patience is the key. I am excited to have movement but I know it will still need some time. A big palsy smile to everyone who is afflicted. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery!
