Kidney stones

My brother has been plagued with kidney stones for about the last 8 months. He has passed approx. 40 stones. He has been to the urologist but nothing has been done. He had a stent put in when he came to Michigan. He had a stone on each side and could not take the pain. So he agreed to go to the emergency. He had the stent put in and the stone passed on one side. He has since had three more stones in the last two months. He has one at this very moment. What could possibly cause so many stones. I know that they come back but so many???
